Just Released: ‘Religion in the Public Schools’

When I was in high school, my Christian club secured a legal team to help us navigate what we were allowed to do on school property. Could we have a Bible study during lunch time in the courtyard? Could one of the boys preach like Ray Comfort near the front doors of the school? Was I allowed to have my Bible in class? Was it illegal for the school to censor my friend from sharing the gospel at a school assembly?

We were a controversial group, and the legality of our actions was sometimes called into question. I wish that the club leader had known what the rights of students were and what was considered a breach of church and State separation.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AUSCS) just published a new book detailing the current rights and legal climate connecting religion and schools: Religion in the Public Schools: A Road Map for Avoiding Lawsuits and Respecting Parents’ Legal Rights by Anne Lofaso, an Associate Professor of Law at West Virginia University College of Law.

Watch the introductory video and see if it’s a resource you’d find helpful!

You can download the PDF version of the book for FREE at religioninthepublicschools.com and buy the hard copy for reference on Amazon.com.

Evolution Deniers think like Holocaust Deniers

TGSOE-jacket
So says Richard Dawkins–scientist, author, and activist for atheism–in his upcoming book, The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution.

Later today, I’ll ask you what you think about this method of vocal confrontation and if it’s the most effective means for spreading the truths of science.

I’ve included a few excerpts from his book below. Read more at TimesOnline.

Imagine that, as a teacher of European history, you are continually faced with belligerent demands to “teach the controversy”, and to give “equal time” to the “alternative theory” that the Holocaust never happened but was invented by a bunch of Zionist fabricators.

Fashionably relativist intellectuals chime in to insist that there is no absolute truth: whether the Holocaust happened is a matter of personal belief; all points of view are equally valid and should be equally “respected”.

The plight of many science teachers today is not less dire. When they attempt to expound the central and guiding principle of biology; when they honestly place the living world in its historical context — which means evolution; when they explore and explain the very nature of life itself, they are harried and stymied, hassled and bullied, even threatened with loss of their jobs.

… This book is necessary. I shall be using the name “historydeniers” for those people who deny evolution: who believe the world’s age is measured in thousands of years rather than thousands of millions of years, and who believe humans walked with dinosaurs.

Evolution is a fact. Beyond reasonable doubt, beyond serious doubt, beyond sane, informed, intelligent doubt, beyond doubt evolution is a fact. The evidence for evolution is at least as strong as the evidence for the Holocaust, even allowing for eye witnesses to the Holocaust. It is the plain truth that we are cousins of chimpanzees, somewhat more distant cousins of monkeys, more distant cousins still of aardvarks and manatees, yet more distant cousins of bananas and turnips . . . continue the list as long as desired. That didn’t have to be true. It is not self-evidently, tautologically, obviously true, and there was a time when most people, even educated people, thought it wasn’t. It didn’t have to be true, but it is. We know this because a rising flood of evidence supports it. Evolution is a fact, and [my] book will demonstrate it. No reputable scientist disputes it, and no unbiased reader will close the book doubting it.

BTW: Dawkins doesn’t much like the headline of the article, but I found it quite provocative, even though it takes the discussions to Hitler instead of to the seat of the problem, which is the anti-scientific views and biases prevalent in our societies. Do you think it distracts from the message or emphasizes the point?

Atheist Missionary vs. Christian Missionary

It all started in early June with a challenge. The Atheist Missionary (TAM) was contacted by a Christian missionary known as da:

I am a convinced theist (new-born christian) and also a missionary. You propose a book I will read, I propose a book you will read. … If your book is convincing you might convert a theist into an atheist and get rid of one of their missionaries. This blog is about convert, isn’t it? So what about cutting the chitchat and getting serious. Who dares?

Ooh, ooh, pick me! Pick me! TAM nearly frothed at the mouth for a chance like this, and accepted this duel of literary exploration.
Purpose Driven Life vs. The End of Faith

The books of choice are The Purpose Driven® Life: What on Earth Am I Here For? by Rick Warren, well-known evangelical pastor of Saddleback Church, and The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason by Sam Harris, a prominent Atheist and founder of The Reason Project. [Enough links for ya?]

I am very eager to catch up on the chapters these two intelligent people have already examined. I think you’ll enjoy their insights and humor.

It all starts with TAM’s first post on TPDL chapter 1 (scroll down) and da‘s initial installment on chapter 1 of TEOF.

Da‘s posts are all titled “Why the End of Faith is just its beginning #__” and TAM’s posts are called “Deconstructing The Purpose Drive Life Chapter __”. Until an archive is set up just for these posts, you’ll have to do a little hunting through the monthly archives.

You should keep an eye on the posts over at TAM’s blog and follow him on twitter or subscribe to the RSS feed to get the updates! Let’s see how it goes. We might learn something!

Book LOL of the Day: The Exorsistah

The Exorsistah
I haven’t been around much lately since I just moved to a new place, took a vacation, and work just got a hell of a lot crazier. But, by the power of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I am here to provide you with some literary entertainment! Who else is in the mood for sassy teenage love, exorcisms, and fashion advice?

Claudia Mair Burney, a Christian fiction author, released an interesting novel in 2008 titled The Exorsistah. The book has received five 5-star reviews on amazon. The cover reads, “If you think the streets are mean, meet Emme Vaughn, demon-huntress.” Oh yes, folks, this is a golden example of contemporary Christian literature. Don’t ask how I got it; just sit back, relax, and wonder along with me how writing like this gets published.

Let’s hear some quotes, shall we? Starting with the opening paragraphs:
